What happened to World Bank funds for school lunch in Uganda? E-mail

Eric KashambuziIn January 2004 while addressing a meeting in Bushenyi district in southwest Uganda, President Museveni announced that the World Bank had agreed to provide lunch for school pupils whose parents could not afford it (The Monitor January 13, 2004). School lunches are provided free in developed and developing country schools. They improve attendance and performance especially of girls. It was against this background that NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development) adopted a resolution that African governments should provide school lunches using as much as possible locally produced food as part of agricultural transformation from subsistence to commercial agriculture.

Eric KashambuziWe were taught to say a prayer in thanks to the Almighty when the going was smooth or in seeking guidance when it was hard. When NRM came to power in 1986 many Ugandans said a prayer in thanks that the bad days were over. Now it is time to say a prayer seeking guidance on the way forward because Uganda is in a political, economic, social and ecological crisis. This is now recognized by those in and out of power in Uganda.

The principal reason why Africa was colonized is because Africans were divided. Take the case of Uganda starting with religious wars. The Muslims had their group of supporters; the Catholics had their group and the Protestants theirs. And they fought one another. That conflict had an adverse impact that has not vanished. Bunyoro would not have been devastated as it was had Africans joined it or stayed neutral. And who captured Kabarega and Mwanga?

Uganda's development needs a different approach E-mail

Eric KashambuziThere are things that we shall keep in the media until solutions are found. One of the senior officials at the United Nations in New York replied to a question that conferences on the same subjects will continue to be organized until solutions are found. I agreed with him then, I agree with him now. And that is what I intend to do with Uganda until solutions to the questions raised are found.
